New Hobby Terminal Construction Begins

September 31, 2013

SouthWest Airlines has begun construction of the new International Air Passenger Terminal at Houston's Hobby Airport.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Houston Mayor Annise Parker, as well as local and state dignitaries, and Southwest Airlines company officials.

Although the airport is owned and operated by the City of Houston Airport System, the new terminal building is being financed and built by SouthWest Airlines, who will also be the primary user of the new five-gate passenger facility. In addition to five new passenger gates, the new building will include security checkpoints and ticketing areas.  The Houston Airport System plans to build a new multilevel parking garage and improve roadways near the airport.

Construction imediately commenced after the brief ceremony, and the terminal is scheduled to be ready for use in 2015.  Once the new facility opens, SouthWest Airlines will begin international flights to the Caribbean, Mexico, and a variety of destinations in South America.
